Fall House and Condo/Apartment Maintenance Tips

Tasks to complete before the cold comes

This summer has been a hot one, but now that September is here, it is time to slowly think about the cold weather that will be coming in the months ahead.  There are things as a home owner/condo owner that you can address early.  Here is a checklist of items that you should think of doing before it gets too cold.

HVAC & Air Circulation

  • Change or clean the HVAC/AC filter (if accessible). This helps air quality and efficiency.

  • Test your thermostat and fix or report issues.

  • Check baseboard heaters or radiators for dust or blockages.

  • Use ceiling fans in reverse (clockwise) to circulate warm air once the heat comes on.

 Windows & Doors

  • Feel for drafts: Use removable weatherstripping or draft blockers if needed.

  • Use thermal curtains to insulate against cold.

  • Ensure windows close properly and locks work—fix broken seals or gaps.

 Deep Clean & Declutter

  • Clean behind and underneath furniture.

  • Declutter your space to make room for winter gear (coats, boots, etc.).

  • Clean or replace bathroom/kitchen exhaust fan filters.

 Prepare for Wet Weather

  • Get a boot tray or mat by the door for wet shoes.

  • Check balcony drainage (if applicable) to prevent water buildup.

  • Store summer gear from balconies or patios to protect it from wind and snow.

 Seasonal Storage & Organization

  • Swap out summer clothes for fall/winter gear.

  • Organize your winter tools including shovel, salt, windshield scraper.

Indoor Comfort Preparation

  • Stock up on cold weather supplies such as batteries, candles, warm blankets, non-perishable food.
