April Exterior Check
Exterior Maintenance Tips After an Ottawa Winter
As the snow melts and temperatures rise, April is the ideal time to focus on your home’s exterior. Ottawa winters can be tough on roofs, foundations, and landscaping—so a thorough outdoor check now helps prevent bigger (and more expensive) issues later.
Why It Matters
Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, and ice buildup can cause subtle damage that isn’t always visible at first glance. Addressing these issues early not only protects your home’s structure, but also boosts curb appeal—especially important if you're considering selling this spring or summer.
Roof & Gutters
Inspect shingles for signs of wear, curling, or missing pieces
Look for debris buildup in valleys and around vents
Clean out gutters and ensure downspouts are directing water away from the foundation
Check for signs of ice dam damage along roof edges
Foundation & Drainage
Walk the perimeter of your home and look for cracks or shifting
Watch for pooling water near the foundation after rainfall or snow melt
Ensure downspouts extend at least 5–10 feet away from the home
Check window wells are clear and draining properly
Lawn & Landscaping
Rake away dead grass, leaves, and salt residue from winter
Aerate compacted soil and reseed patchy areas
Trim back damaged branches on trees and shrubs
Add fresh mulch to garden beds to retain moisture and improve appearance
Exterior & Surfaces
Power wash siding, decks, patios, and walkways to remove dirt and salt stains
Inspect decks and fences for loose boards, nails, or rot
Clean and repair interlock or driveway surfaces as needed
Outdoor Fixtures
Turn on outdoor taps and check for leaks or reduced pressure (a sign of freeze damage)
Inspect hoses, sprinkler systems, and irrigation lines before regular use
Clean and set up outdoor furniture for the season
